Empowering Children with Nutrition

Helping to provide school meals to give more children a brighter future.

Good nutrition is key to helping children build healthy eating habits and knowledge they can use throughout their lives. Understanding this, Ekta Shakti Foundation runs various Nutrition Programs to ensure that every child gets the nutrition they need for a healthy and successful life. Starting in Delhi, the Foundation has now reached around 1 million children across the country.
To fight malnutrition, Ekta Shakti Foundation works actively through the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program of the Government of India. So far, the Foundation has provided over 8 crore meals to school children in nearly 8,000 schools across Delhi, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Assam.

Additionally, the Foundation partnered with Unilever through its CSR program to distribute Take Home Ration Kits to children in government schools in Nalanda and Begusarai (Bihar) and East Godavari (Andhra Pradesh).
Time and again, Ekta Shakti Foundation has shown its strong commitment to improving the lives of children by promoting better nutrition and health across India.

Mid Day Meal Programme

A mid-day meal is a school lunch, provided to children in government and government-aided schools in India as a part of the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) initiative (formerly the Mid-Day Meal Scheme) to improve their nutritional levels and support their education.

In November 2001, the Supreme Court of India passed a mandate stating, “We direct the state governments/union territories to implement the Mid-Day Meal Scheme by providing every child in every government and government-assisted primary school with a prepared mid-day meal.”

The provision of mid-day meals in India has helped in:

So, the organization strives to ensure that the Mid-Day Meal is healthy, nutritious, and packed with all the important fibers, vitamins, and nutrients required for the healthy growth of the child. The meals are customized as per the regional or local taste and provisions by the government.

Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)

Under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program, Anganwadi Centers provide supplementary nutrition along with essential services such as pre-school education, nutrition and health awareness, immunization, health check-ups, and referral support.

In line with this initiative, the Ekta Shakti Foundation established four Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in 2014 under the Ekta Vihar Project, creating new avenues for women to enhance their livelihoods and overall well-being.

To strengthen this mission, the Foundation has been actively engaged in the supply and distribution of supplementary nutrition by establishing and building the capacity of these women’s SHGs. These groups provide nutritional support to ICDS beneficiaries for 300 days each year. The primary goal of forming these SHGs is to empower women—enabling them to achieve financial independence and become more active contributors within their families and communities.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ekta Shakti Foundation took proactive steps to support children by distributing Take Home Ration (THR) kits to school-going children. In 2021-2022, the Foundation partnered with Unilever to deliver these kits to children in government schools across Nalanda and Begusarai districts (Bihar) and East Godavari district (Andhra Pradesh).

The Foundation worked with full dedication to reach over 45,000 children in these regions. The program had a strong positive impact—improving children’s nutrition and leading to an increase in school enrolments after the program was implemented.

Such initiatives are essential for helping marginalized children become part of mainstream society and should be conducted more frequently to ensure lasting change.

To support this mission, Ekta Shakti Foundation has been actively contributing by helping set up Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These groups aim to empower women, making them financially independent and more active members of their families and communities.

As part of this effort, in 2014, the Foundation established 4 SHGs under the Ekta Vihar Project, creating new opportunities for women to improve their livelihoods and well-being.

Unilever

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ekta Shakti Foundation took proactive steps to support children by distributing Take Home Ration (THR) kits to school-going children. In 2021-2022, the Foundation partnered with Unilever to deliver these kits to children in government schools across Nalanda and Begusarai districts (Bihar) and East Godavari district (Andhra Pradesh).

The Foundation worked with full dedication to reach over 25,000 children in these regions. The program had a strong positive impact—improving children’s nutrition and leading to an increase in school enrollments after the program was implemented.

Such initiatives are essential for helping marginalized children become part of mainstream society and should be conducted more frequently to ensure lasting change.
